“Last of the famous international sound boys,” Jace Clayton, aka DJ /Rupture, when not singing his own praises (which is quite the exception as opposed to the rule, dontchya know), is a super humble, soft spoken, pleasant and likable chap who does a weekly radio show on WFMU in NYC, heads up Soot Records and co-heads up Dutty Artz, mixes obscure and disparate sonic sources on a three-turntable get up, writes for several different publications including The Fader, Frieze and The National as well as maintaining his very popular blog, Mudd Up!. A very busy man indeed.
I accompanied him on his trek from Sunset Park, Brooklyn to WFMU just on the other side of the Hudson in NJ. He had plenty to say about his new album, “Uproot,” on Agriculture Records, life in NYC (where he’s just relocated from Barcelona), shopping for cumbia records, being late…..
really nice one Bo. You can get a feel of the man
“Nice apples,”
The sound was particularly good – what did you use? Are you still using the point-and-shoot digicam?
Thanks for another great minidoc… I really enjoy each one.
Ha! well, thanks but….um, well, I am now using a brand spankin’ new Canon HF-100 HD camera – this was my very first outing with it. Literally the first time I’d ever used it…..I used a Sennheiser G2 100 series wireless setup with a countryman B6 mic which is taped into the insdie of his shirt – you can hear him drumming on the mic on his chest as he descends the escalator at the end. It’s all edited in Final Cut Pro. The audio is then exported and mixed in pro tools.
the work flow for all of the previous docs is similar, except I was using a cybershot still camera and recording audio with a Sennheiser 416 shotgun mic into a Tascam HD-P2 flash card recorder. Hand clap slate. then synced up in post.
Honestly, I’m much happier with the sound of the older docs, but much happier with the image in this one. Granted, I could use a lot more practice on the image end of things. My excuse is that I’m actually just a music producer.
